Curious Cupid

Dear Emily,

Do you believe in soul mates? Or do you think there is more than one true love to be had in this life?

Also, do you think its possible for a dog and cat to fall in love?

Sincerely,

Curious Cupid

Dear Curious Cupid,

An emphatic “yes” screamed from a mountaintop to your first question. Soulmates exist, romantically and platonically. There are people who are cut from the same 400-thread count Egyptian cotton cloth. When they meet, an intense connection forms that’s nearly indescribable. I think about my closest friends and I cannot explain to you why I feel so magnetically drawn to them; I can only say that when I’m around them, I feel whole. This is what our platonic soulmates do — they fill our tiny cracks with love and light and hope and meaning. As for romantic soulmates, they hopefully fill our larger holes at least twice a night.

Will you meet more than one of these romantic soulmates over the course of a lifetime? You’re blessed (and sometimes cursed) if you meet one. Being in love is the most incredible feeling in the world. It’s also the most terrifying because being in love means that you’re more vulnerable than you’ve ever been before. You have to strip yourself naked emotionally, which is perhaps an easier feat the first go around. If first love ends, its demise can be very damaging to some people. But I do have hope that it’s possible to feel this kind of love again, as long as you’re open to it. Your guard won’t come down as easily the second (or third or fourth) time which could undermine any chance you have of experiencing a “Big Love” again. Try to be as open as you can with whoever you think deserves it. If not, you could miss out on something that has the potential to be great.

Finally, can a dog and cat fall in love? Three words: Milo And Otis.

Heart!

Emily
